What is Bread and Butter?

Bread and Butter is our midweek "staple" Bible study where we dive into God's word and the Sunday morning sermon. It is designed to take discipleship to the next level and grow closer to Christ.

Whether you’re new to Scripture or have walked with Christ for years, Bread & Butter is designed to help you:

• Sharpen one another by bringing your questions and insights
• Strengthen your faith
• Grow in holiness through the Spirit and the Word
• Experience discipleship in real time
• Belong to a community that is growing together

This is where we gather around God’s Word…
and let Him nourish, shape, and transform us.

Come for fellowship, popcorn, and meaningful conversation—and bring a dessert or appetizer if you’d like.

Weekly Gatherings

Wednesdays | 6:30–7:30 PM | Zion UCC Baroda
• The church provides freshly popped popcorn
• You are welcome to bring a dessert or appetizer to share
• 6:30–7:30 PM — Small-group discussion
• Groups of 6–8 people
• The whole church, friends, and family are invited to participate

Monthly Fellowship Meal

Once a month, Bread & Butter pauses its structured discussion and meets in someone’s home for a shared meal. The goal is simple: deeper friendship, genuine hospitality, and the kind of fellowship we see in Acts 2.

• The host provides the main course
• Others bring a side dish or dessert
• The host determines the time

These meals are optional, but they are a wonderful way to build community.

Bread and Butter Questions for the Week of 5/11

***Important Note*** Some of these questions are difficult. Please do the best you can. They are designed to stretch us and be discussed with others, even outside of Wednesday night.

Kneading (Mon–Wed): Three daily questions (about 15 minutes) that “work the dough” of the sermon and shape us. Write your answers down to prepare for the discussion on Wednesday.

Monday

Read Psalm 37, John 2:15-16, and 1 Samuel 18:10-11

  1. What do you think the average person thinks about anger? How does it compare to the average Christian’s view on anger? Do you think Christians are too stoic?
  2. What seems to get under your skin more than anything else? Is this an example of righteous or unrighteous anger?
  3. Compare and contrast the anger in John 2:15-16 and 1 Samuel 18:10-11.

Tuesday

Read Ephesians 4:26

  1. How can we prevent letting anger get hold of our hearts? What are some practical steps to evict anger?
  2. How does anger manifest differently between men and women? How do men and women differ in the ways they get “justice?”
  3. Do you think Christians should get angrier more often at the evils in society? What actions can Christians take to get justice? Is violence ever acceptable?

Wednesday

Read Psalm 37 and Mark 11:11-15

  1. How does Jesus’ patience play a role in Mark 11:11-15?
  2. The Hebrew word for “wait patiently” in Psalm 37:7 is Chul. Chul literally means
To writhe, twist, or dance; to travail.” What does this literal meaning teach us about the difficulties in handling anger as the new self?
  3. Read Psalm 69:24, 28. Do you think Christians should pray the same way when it comes to their enemies? Why or why not?

Wednesday night meet up for discussion! Tables start at 6:30 pm at Zion! See you there.
Baking (Thurs–Sat): Three daily questions/activities that help you “rise” into next week’s sermon passage. Write your questions down to prepare for the upcoming sermon.

Thursday

Read Mark 7

  1. What are some questions that come to your mind when you read this passage? Write down at least 3.
  2. Do you seem to struggle with pride?
  3. How would you summarize this section of scripture in a couple of sentences?

Friday

Read Mark 7

  1. Write down a prayer to God that asks Him for help in understanding a certain question you have about this passage of scripture.
  2. What is God doing in this text, and how does that make you feel? Be specific.
  3. In what ways does modern culture disagree with this text? How does it challenge or affirm you?

Saturday

Read Mark 7

  1. Send someone a text, call someone on the phone, or have a conversation in person about what you found interesting about Mark 7.
  2. Say a prayer to God for people in your life who would be blessed by hearing this section of scripture.
  3. In what ways does this text connect to other texts in the Bible? Find a connecting verse in another book.
